BOS letter to tribe
From the Middleboro Board of Selectmen meeting of 2/22/2010 – town manager Charles Cristello reads the draft of a letter to the Mashpee Wampanoag. The letter is prompted by reports that the tribe has been fishing around the Freetown/Fall River area for a new casino location. It’s pretty common knowledge that the sovereign casino in Middleboro is doubtful at best and most likely impossible. It is also obvious to most that the amount of infrastructure required for the Middleboro location makes the project a non-starter.
The tone of the letter is more forceful than past communications which have been mostly fawning and ineffectual. In a subsequent post I will include video of the BOS and public discussion.
Great! Now we are paying our expensive lawyer to consult on the writing of useless letters. I would like to see a list of expenses to the town over the last three years for this boondoggle. Of course this list would not include the price of lost image and spirit in the community.
Guess numbers:
+750K – payments from tribe
-220K – payments to Whittlesey
-110K – cost of TMFH
20K – payments to TMFH
-374K – spent planning money
Leaves us in the black by $26K. This does not
include the cost of the considerable time spentn
by various town employees on the project. Nor
does include the cost of ignoring other issues
caused by the inordinate amount of time and effort
spent by the BOS and other people.
the key strong arm we have is that:
they will need to keep paying the 250 a year if they don’t use the land and go to Fall River
that the Mass Highway need to take down guard rail to access the property
the legal issue of voiding a contract we should ask for a compensation cut of the Fall River profit
that the easy out for the tribe is to give the land back to the town to void the contract (win-win)
They just don’t care what the taxpayers of Middleboro want! Time and Time again the people have said NO!!–from the beginning most did not want this GIGANTIC facility to be built in this small town but the selectmen and town officials AT THEIR OWN PERIL have ignored the people and tried to push this through–OBAMA HEALTHCARE STYLE–without the people being able to have a say! Remember all the big signs all over the trees and lawns of the downtown “Middleboro Mansions” where our officials were professing their love for then Wampanoags –saying ” Middleboro Welcomes The Wampanoag ” is that how you really felt? They tried so hard to make a back-room deal –Remember all the people that were standing in the Middleboro rotary? Remember they even had kids there with signs that said ” PLEASE MY DADDY NEEDS A JOB ” Disgraceful!! If you want a job go get a job but don”t pimp your kids for the Wampanoags!! Also remember that all those people holding signs came there on plain white shuttle buses with CONNECTICUT plates !! They need to publish in the GAZETTE every aspect and language of this agreement and processes that lead them to believe that this is what the people wanted!! Also lets not forget that while they have been courting the Wampanoag the closed down the new firestation!!! Dont forget these people that pushed you aside on election day !!!!
hey we said no!
the “middleboro Mansions” you refer to all are owned by the same slum lord who see’s the writing on the wall and wants to get the heck out of middleboro
I do live at a main st address, did not have a yea casino sign but have invested time and money to make middleboro look and be better
quick question do you volunteer on any committees of town groups
I do with the thought that I never want to see something rammed down my throat like the IGA (or EMS)
