News from Casinos No!
Something you can do…..that won’t cost a dime
Tthis came in today from Dennis Bailey via email – Bumpkin
The campaign for two casinos in Maine – one in Oxford and one in Scarborough – is coming down to the wire. Polls show a close race.
The casino proponents are pulling out all stops, spending tens of thousands of dollars on their deceptive schemes to exploit Maine people for their personal gain.
So we need one last favor.
Over the weekend, send an e-mail to everyone in your address book and tell them to vote NO on Question 2. (If they live in Scarborough, tell them to also vote no Special referendum #1). And tell all your friends to send it to their friends.
With the race as close as it is, only a handful of votes could decide the future of casino gambling in Maine. Are we going to become just another casino state, or are we going to preserve what’s best about Maine?
Spread the message by ‘word of mouse.’ Question 2 is a very bad deal for Maine.
Cut and paste the message below into your e-mail, or compose your own. But do it today. With your help, we can send Las Vegas packing.
Thanks.

Hi ___________________
I just want to write to urge you to vote NO on question 2, the proposal for a Las Vegas casino in Oxford County
This is a very bad deal for Maine. Even the proponents call it a “mess,” and say it needs “a gallon of Wite-Out” to correct. But they are spending more than $2 million to convince us to pass it anyway.
Question 2 will lower the legal age to gamble in a casino from 21 to 19. It will give the big Las Vegas owner a 10-year monopoly on casinos in Maine. It will allow the casino to extend credit to its customers, so people can keep on playing even after their cash and credit cards have been exhausted. And it makes the president of the casino a full-voting member of dozens of state boards and bodies that have control over health care, education and the environment.
And that’s just some of problems with the proposal.
A casino in Oxford County will make the area poorer, not richer. People are struggling now to put gas in their cars and pay their heating bills. Luring them into a casino to throw their money into slot machines owned by a big Las Vegas corporation is no solution. Casinos aren’t built from the money of winners, but from the money of losers.
Maine will be the loser if Question 2 passes next Tuesday. We will become just another casino state, and the qualities that make Maine special and our future bright will be gone. Every major newspaper in Maine has editorialized against Question 2. If this was really about jobs and economic development, don’t you think one newspaper would come out in favor of it?
If you need more information, or want to read the entire text of the casino bill, go to http://www.casinosno.org
Please send this e-mail to all of your friends. We need to reach as many people as possible with the truth about this awful proposal. And Vote NO on Question 2.
Best,
[Your Name]
PS: If you live in Scarborough, you can also vote NO on special municipal referendum #1, another deceptive proposal for a racetrack casino in Scarborough. On Tuesday, let’s send a strong message that Maine doesn’t want any more casinos.
