This week’s Gazette article started of being about how my musical tastes evolved over time. It ended up being an acknowledgement of how, like it or not, our parents influence us in ways both overt and subtle.

Here are some clips that tie in to the column.

Polka purgatory
I could’t have come up with anything better than this comment from the YouTube video: “Awesome. Must be the entire world’s supply of canary yellow formal wear.

Pffttt. change the channel
The obligatory “You met another and pfft you were gone” bit.

It didn’t all suck
Here’s some pretty kickin’ banjo pickin’ from Roy Clark and Bobby Thompson

The Beatles
One of my first musical loves, they led me to the great bands of the 60′s and 70′s including the Grateful Dead.
The Grateful Dead
Many Dead shows, many good times. The Dead led me to the bluegrass and old time music I listen to today.
Bluegrass
Sharon Gilchrist was mesmerizing at a Peter Rowan/Tony Rice Quartet show. She led me to Mary & Mars, Uncle Earl, Abigail Washburn, and lots of great old time music. Sharon needs to stop hanging around with old bluegrass guys and start hanging around with less-old bluegrass guys like me.

I wonder if she’d mind that I’m a hopeless amateur musician and couldn’t afford to pay anything, have no gigs, and no records.

Have you had the opportunity to enjoy Pearly Baker at The Bullpen on Tuesday nights?

    No.

I’ll keep my eyes open for them.

Clearly they’re a Dead tribute band. “Pearly Baker” is a character in the Dead song “Wharf Rat” – one of my faves. I’ve seen many a fine performance of this song in my day.

In later years (’79 and beyond), the “But I’ll get back” bridge featured some great 3-part harmony.

    My name is August West
And I love my Pearly Baker best, more than my wine
    More than my wine
More than my maker, though he’s no friend of mine

    Everyone said
    I’d come to no good
    I knew I would
    Pearly, believed them
    Half of my life
Spent doing time for some other f*cker’s crime
    The other half found me
Stumbling around, drunk on burgundy wine

Let me know when you want to go. I can’t stand most of their playlist but the crowd is a hoot. Half are 20ish Deadheads. Starts at 10PM. Cover is $5. Tim Richmond is one of my buds that plays in the band. They have been around 20+ years.

    20ish Deadheads?

    Entertaining or aggravating? Discuss.

Maybe I’m just feeling my age, but does anyone else think its annoying being around a bunch of 20 somethings who think they know everything about a band they’ve probably never seen?
Its great they enjoy the music and we have that in common. I just don’t want to have to talk to them about it.

Oh well, when I find myself in the company of 20ish Deadheads, I guess there’s nothin left to do but smile , smile, smile!

When I worked in the Quincy area I use to go running at Wompatuck State Park and when the Dead were in town the camp followers would show up and camp for a few days. They’d sell bread, dope, tie-dye’s, pottery and assorted junk. This were folks in their 40s and 50s – my age group. Sad. But the vans were colorful.

Now you still have it with the kids I see at The Bullpen – a real major league dump. Some are college kids trying to be like mom and dad were at one time and others just like the music and others for the play list that is only a fraction “Dead.”

As the very old joke goes: What did one Deadhead say to the other when they ran out of weed? “Hey, man, this music really sucks.”
