Mohegan Lung

This kind of thing drives me nuts.

Bruce “Two Dogs” Bozsum, chairman of the Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority, vowed that while the tribe can do little about the economic fallout and its impact on the casinos, it will take whatever steps necessary to avoid adding a smoking ban to the mix.

Bozsum said he is certain the state will see the wisdom of rejecting proposed legislation to ban smoking on the casino floor. He said the ban would hit the casinos hard — and by extension the money it sends to the state — and would lead to a protracted legal battle over tribal sovereignty.

“We are confident we will mitigate issues with communication and common sense,” he said.

The casino will move toward a ban on smoking when surrounding states, such as New Jersey and Pennsylvania, do so.

Here’s the story:

Allowing smoking at a casino when state law bans it – is indefensible.

End of story.

Here’s what every other business in CT has to abide by. Why are we even discussing this?

  • Bans smoking in all restaurants, cafés and taverns (bars) after April 1, 2004.
  • Bans smoking in establishments with the following liquor permits: university, hotel, resort, restaurant, juice bar, railroad, airline, coliseum, special sporting facility, nonprofit theater, nonprofit public museum, bowling establishment, racquetball establishment, and airport restaurant.

So let me get this straight. Now, allowing people to “game” in a healthier athmosphere is an attack on tribal sovereignty?

Anonymous- You miss the point, EVERYTHING IS AN ATTACK! Unions, the Supreme Court, US Attorneys, Attorneys General, Smoking laws, regulations on alcohol, Anti-casino advocates, just to name a quick few.

Any time there is a challenge it is always a racist attack!

THANK GOODNESS THAT NEVER TOOK PLACE IN MIDDLEBORO!!!!!!

Same thing in R.I. and this is a public health issue and should be approached as such. Personally, I consider smokers in my presence the same as anyone carrying a contagious disease.

I have no figures so what follows this represents is off the top of my head observational. I have been to many casinos. I’d have to say about fifty. I feel comfortable saying that the number of smokers in a casino is greater than that of the general population. They’ll cater to their habits knowing the non smokers have their own addictions and will still show up.

      Right bogo.

My only experience is a week in the MGM Grand Las Vegas about 4 yrs ago.

Like most casinos, things are set up so you basically can’t get out of the hotel, to the pool, or food, or anyplace without passing by slots. This really bothered me because I was with my kids and the smoke was everywhere.

I came away with the impression that everyone in Nevada smokes.

It also ticks me off that they’re trying to defend this indefensible position by with the old “racist attack on tribal sovereignty” trick.

Oh gee….the tribe doesn’t want to play by the same rules that everyone else does….I bet THAT’S never happend before.

      Great blog BB.
