MP3′s from 5/22 Flat Iron Gig

By , May 23, 2010 2:22 pm

I had a great time at the Flat Iron last night – and extra thanks to everyone who took time out of their busy lives to attend. This was my third solo acoustic gig. I’m pretty happy with the way things are going and think that each show has been an improvement on the last one. That is most certainly not to imply that the performances are perfect. There is no lack of mistakes.

I had help from guests Marese Barry – aka Mary Barry Massage Therapy on Closer To Fine and Matt Bargoot. Matt is a former colleague that I haven’t seen for a couple of years. We played together a couple of times a number of years ago and whipped out an unrehearsed version of The Boxer that wasn’t too shabby. Matt also provided harmonies on Norwegian Wood. The gig marked my first public performance on the 5 string banjo – an instrument I’ve been playing for less than a month. That was on Goin’ ‘Cross The Mountain. Sadly it’s slightly out of tune but still not bad for a first effort.

you were very good, Bellicose and your wife has a talent that we discovered that night.
Thank you for the wonderful entertainment.

I wasn’t there, but I listened to “Freight Train” and “Norwegian Wood,” two songs that I actually could play 40+ years ago. Brings back memories…

    You’re very kind – thanks.

I goofed up the pickin’ on Freight Train a bit – it’s new to me. You should do a guest appearance at my next gig. We could collaborate on an original song. I’m thinking a real tender moving ballad – working title “We love our frackin’ leaders”

I think I have been at all of the Bumpkin paid gigs in Middleboro! It is a nice night out and we have lots of fun!

Does this make me a groupie?

I was a big fan of R.E.M. when they were on I.R.S. records (pre ’89). It appears you were too. Remember V66 music video on cable? They played “alternative” before there was alternative . Mike Nesmith is a bad mutha f’er. Nice job.

Right – not one but two Nesmith tunes. I’m open to suggestions for others that would work well in a single guitar/singer/harmonic/banjo format. Sweet Young Thing is a possible.

LOL. Unfortunately, I have a touch of ‘ritis in my left hand and chord changes are a bear now. I did pick up on your missteps on “Freight Train” only because I know how it’s played. I had the recording by Elizabeth Cotten, but lost it in one of my breakups.

Elizabeth Cotton, I believe, played it left handed on a right handed guitar. Crazy cool lady.
