Non-failure to launch

I fulfilled a lifelong dream today – witnessing a launch at Cape Canaveral. The space shuttle Atlantis took off on time at around 2:28 PM under mostly clear skies.

We viewed the launch from Spaceview Park and veterans memorial in Titusville FL(Butthead voice: Ahah – he said titus). This is several miles away but still very impressive. What was surprising was how bright the fiery crap coming out the back end was – almost hurt to look at. Equally impressive was the rumble that hit us shortly after take off. A deep throbbing sound that you could feel in your chest.

Here is a picture – which does not even come close to doing justice to it.

My Dad called me from there as it was taking off so I had it on FoxTV while listening to it over the phone. My Dad lives in Titusville which is next to Cape Canaveral but each time I visit, I never time it right so I can see the Shuttle go up. It is one of the most amazing achievments in Technology ever invented.
